This is a data visualization website on the grooming of children into radicalized ideologies. The brief was to create a data visualization site that informs users.

This site highlights the dangers of radicalization on offers guidance on how to counteract them.

The Objective

Social media has increased the risk of people being radicalized online. Extremists employ manipulative narratives, such as a dichotomy of "us vs. them" to justify extremist action and gain trust (they are just ‘victims’). This leads to an increase in activity in extremist groups.

The Insight

People want to be part of something greater than themselves, which can be manipulated by extremists who offer a false sense of purpose and belonging. Lonely people want an escape and these ideologies offer purpose and belonging.

The Concept

The Siren’s Song: Based on the Sirens in the Odyssey with the idea that the call to radicalization being alluring like the Sirens. The concept is telling the viewer that falling for radical ideologies is like being lured by a siren.

The Solution

A data visualization website that informs people about the dangers of radicalization, what to do if someone you know or yourself get radicalized, and to take a pledge that prevents radicalization. This is all through a gamified metaphore of Sirens.
